Giveaway: HP Pavilion dm3!

The Giveaway Is Closed :(

I don’t normally have big news to break via my blog, but today, that’s all going to change. By reading this post you’re on your way to winning a FREE HP Pavilion dm3 laptop. (Do I have your attention?)

Screen shot 2009-11-17 at 3.12.27 PM

OH MAN!

I don’t do a ton of giveaways on Free and Flawed, but I knew that holding out for something awesome would pay off. HP is giving me one thin and light HP dm3 to give away to one of my spiffy readers. Yep, Christmas is coming early folks. Just call me Santa Jenn. Ho, ho, ho!

What You Need To Know

- HP dm3 is 1-inch thin and 4.5 lbs. Your shoulders will be happy!
- Features like snap, pin, shake and peak (sounds like a weird dance) in Windows 7 make day-to-day tasks a breeze.
- Conference goers rejoice! The HP dm3 boasts 10 hours of battery life (TEN!) Thank the mega awesome power management system, which tells YOUR brand-spankin’ new HP to run fewer background activities, dim the screen and turn off unused ports. Phew!

I’ve been taking a walk down memory lane and thought about my very first computer: A giant mammoth of a monitor and a super slow processor. Remembering my dinosaur got me thinking about the HOURS I would spend on AOL chatting it up with complete strangers in hope one would turn out to be my soul mate (thanks for the false hope Meg Ryan!)

Naturally I blamed my screenname for that.

Screen shot 2009-11-17 at 3.21.41 PM

What You Need To Do

You have to share something embarrassing with me. I want to know what your first screenname was.

My Top Three:
1) Newbie: jennco02 (jenn class of ‘02 – unfortunately people thought my name was jennco.)
2) Conceited: angelickisses (don’t judge me.)
3) My emo phase: noturstar (you can thank Dashboard Confessional and Something Corporate for that one)

There, if I can share so can you.

But Wait! There’s More!

If you think you could use some extra luck, share this giveaway with friends. TWEET about it, BLOG about it, SCREAM it from the rooftop. Each tweet/blog post = another chance to WIN.

If my blog generates the most comments, tweets, posts, etc. out of nine others, I will receive another dm3 of my very own, which I will also give away. That’s a possibility of TWO laptops and TWO happy readers.

Screen shot 2009-11-17 at 3.23.36 PM
How to enter:
(You can do ONE or ALL of the following)
1. Leave a comment with your most embarrassing screenname. If you weren’t a chatter, use a blog name!
2. Tweet about it and ask your friends to tweet too! Leave a separate comment linking back to your tweet every time you do and I’ll count each of those entries.
3. Write a blog post about a) what you would do with a new computer, b) how technology has changed your life OR c) share more embarrassing details from your AOL days (be sure to link to this giveaway & comment with a link to your blog post.)

Don’t forget to wish Peter a very happy birthday!

I will stop collecting entries on Tuesday, November 24th

My one of my old screen name was “EntertheForce” I wanted to be different and I was in the Star Wars crazed. Before that was “Phamachu” because of Pokeman. As for the one I have now, Phampants, that’s because my college buddies know me very well that I don’t wear pants often.

I still use my first screenname, actually. I never fell into the stupid screenname game. (no offense!)Zmans99 is pretty old, but it’s easily identifiable to me, so it works.

The one weird username I’ve used is The Flippin- pretty sure that’s my Digg username. ‘The Flippin’ was a nickname I was given in college, and to this day no one really knows what the hell it means, or why I was called it. I’ve embraced it though, at least with my college buddies.

Party with me for a ‘fippin’ good time! haha…

Pretty sure my first screen name ever was “jennbollen” back when our SNs were limited to 10 characters. How quickly THAT ran out. Then I realized that people were doing cool things with theirs, and my parents got freaked out about internet security and using my real name (ha. if they could see me now…) so I changed it to “soccr33grl”

Yeah. Awesome.

My first screen name, which by the way, is still the active email account that my friends all use, is iluvnsync25. I am now 27 years old. Until I graduated, this was my online name everywhere. First screenname, was, and so remains “anfsteve11″ Anf because I’m such a little Abercrombie whore…or was, and 11 because I’m obsessed with graduating in 2011. It only remains this because I’m still young and haven’t had the time to further embarrass myself…love you!

My very first screen name was sunburst82, which anyone who knows me knows is a total misnomer. The 82 part fits, because it’s the year I was born, but I am not so much sunny. Nor do I even really like the sun all that much.

My next one was sublime179. Apparently I was a big fan of S words, and the 179 was because just 79 was taken. And 79 was the year the guy I liked was born. I am a huge dork.

And for my stupidest one: pooklyn82. It’s a combination of two of my nicknames at the time, Pookie and Brooklyn (actual name: Brooke). I thought it was genius, but since I had to add some numbers, I guess I wasn’t as original as I would have liked to be.

Free laptop, FTW! That is epic.

My first screen name was “brainyjane22″. Is my middle name Jane? No. Am I particularly brainy? No. Why I picked that, I have no freaking clue. Better still, it’s part of the url to my blog. Man. My blog is old. I suppose it could be worse. It could have been “Pacyismine4eva”, which could have happened, since I went through a difficult Dawson’s Creek viewing period when I first started blogging. Thank goodness for small miracles.

My first handle was wombat. Before I was even online, my middle school friends and I picked out cool animal code names one day, and for some reason I thought a chubby marsupial suited me. The nickname stuck, and when I started getting online I used it in various forms. I had a website (on tripod.com) called Wombat World my first email address was on Hotmail (before Microsoft bought it, mind you) was wombatzg (my initials), and my first AIM screenname was WombatZ. I think Mr McBastard is a much better choice.

oh man, memories. My first screen name on AOL was cards103. Why? Because it was my freshman year at college and AOL was brand spanking new pretty much. I didn’t understand that I could have my own separate, private name so I created a name that both my roommate and I could use. So cards=our school mascot was the cardinals, 103=our dorm room number.

I’m blushing just writing about this moment.

Well I probably should not find mine embarrassing since it combines what I do (mommy) with my husbands last name (Goswami), I’m sure not many people can boast that their occupation and their husband rhyme, but everytime I have to spell out “mommyswami” I feel like Drew Barrymore in the wedding singer, Julia Gulia. Invariably the person on the other end laughs.

My family started calling me this almost 15 years ago now. I have used it for everything. Recently I felt enough is enough and tried to change it. I heard so many objections from friends, family and people I barely know that I switched back. I guess it’s like branding for me. I’m going to have to come up with some sort of product to make all he ridicule worthwhile

to this day i have no idea what a hellafied gangsta lean is, but i do know that i felt cool when i sang it and the term has lived on in my many iterations of blogs ever since (see http://www.hellafied.blogspot.com) for current version.

Past screennames – My very first one was Daffy28919. To this day, I don’t remember what those numbers stood for, but I love Daffy Duck so that’s obviously where the Daffy part came from. There was also Daffy5628.

Then there was HomeDepotPossePinky, which was actually Hmedptpossepinky because there was a 16 character limit. Me and some online friends created the “Home Depot Posse”… um, yeah no idea why, haha! And everyone’s nicknames were like “Stinky,” “Pinky,” “Slinky,” etc… it was pretty ridiculous. And from there emerged…

CaptainChipmunk. I had some weird fascination with chipmunks at the time. Oh, how young I was, haha!

When I first started using aim, it was only to talk to my long distance girlfriend, since all the cool people used ICQ (Who needs names when you have a number! Mine was 4601498… disturbing that I still remember this).

So, I used muffinFO. F and O being my initals and muffin being her nickname for me. Short for stud muffin. Named because when she got me, she beat out the handful of girls that were trying to be with me, and I guess she felt smug about that.

I took a lot of abuse from that screen name, and dreaded the conversations explaining this, especially after we broke up. You may ask why I kept it. I’ll tell you: I am a man. A lazy, lazy man. One who would rather tell this story than create another account. And so I have again.

It’s ridiculous. There was another screen name involving ducks, but I can’t remember what it was.

My first screen name was “orkaboy,” as I started off in college as a Marine Biology major. The proper spelling, which would be “orcaboy,” was already taken, most likely by an effeminate 11-year-old boy who had been to Sea World one too many times. The worst part was that I used this name across multiple forums, and trolls often took to calling me “okraboy”. Someone even went so far as to ’shop my avatar’s head onto a piece of okra once. Heartless bastards.

We were just weird. And 52 was my favorite number. BUT! In my defense! It was 1997, and I was only 14. You’re allowed to be a weirdo when you’re 14, right?

I’ve always tried to avoid screennames with numbers at the ends of them. I think it makes me seem unoriginal. Like, “I wanted to be ________ but there were already 28 of them, so I’m _______29.” Not my style. I wanted to be unique.

My first was AnelleBell. I had a friend whose IM name was MarieTree (her name was not Marie), and I thought the whole rhyme thing was neat. And I liked the character Anelle in “Steel Magnolias” (although I was not sure how to spell her name… I’m still not, actually).

For a long while I was AieaFlower. Aiea, was my nick name. And flower was… well, I like flowers.

At one point I had Enoylevol, which is “Lovely One” backwards.

I’m pretty sure I had CarmelMcGregor, which was a character I played in a show back in 1999.

And now? Well, I don’t IM anymore. Which is weird. When I did, it seemed like something I would always do. Go figure.

I’ve always embraced my embarrassing mishaps. So here are a few of the screen names I’ve had and the stories behind them:

Polewalker17
When i was a kid I use to love racing, running, etc. The problem was I was pretty fast and would always look behind me to see the competition and would almost definitely run into a light pole, telephone pole, mailbox, something. Ya I was clutzy, but still fast ;)

Fishbiter13

When I turned 13 my mom took me and my brothers to the Florida Keys to visit a friend of hers back from her college days. This friends husband took us out shark fishing, it was a blast. Unfortunately one part of shark fishing is catching chum, and we caught a bunch of baracudas. When we hooked a shark it was my job to pull the chum back into the boat. I was looking the other way, pulling the rope in when my thumb entered the baracuda’s mouth, slicing it open and making me scream like a little girl. In all my panic, my sweet mother looked at me, started laughing and said “I can’t believe you were just bitten by a dead fish.” Ya, I was bitten by a dead fish. Told you I was clumsy haha.

My first screen name was chery0104 because I had used my mother’s name (Cheryl) and birthdate to start up an AOL account. Whenever I went into a chat room, I’d inevitably get someone asking “are you a cherry?” – which was embarrassing, since I was a pretty young teen at the time.

My very first screenname was: ssclueless

I remember trying to pick out a name and being so worried that I was going to pick a “loser” name. The history behind it is that my initials are SS and Clueless just came out and was my favorite movie.

This means I got AOL in 1995 (I was twelve) since that’s when the movie came out and I clearly picked a “non-loser” name because: a) I still have it b) Clueless will remain on my top 20 favorite movies of all time list!

Well I have a couple of embarassing s/ns. My first ever was tombraider091230. My mom’s friend was helping me make it and I was pressed for time so I blurted out a movie I thought looked cool, BUT HAD NOT EVEN SEEN, then added december 9th for the day I had moved and my birth day which was the 30th. Jumble of number + random movie = preteen stupidity. Then I had one that was foreverxslave because I thought I was a cool chick and added an x to make it even more hardcore. Yeah..it wasn’t much to my shame when I had to tell people what it was. My third one was deadly_moonlight because I was depressed and though that dark poetry was the way to go. Oh geez. I really want this laptop. Ok here goes – my first chat name was ‘mistressammie’ and I STILL have a yahoo email address with that name.

The ‘mistress’ was supposed to signify the old form of the word – an unmarried woman. Let’s just say it backfired…someone honestly IM’d me once with something like…

“You’ve just caught me sniffing your shoes in your office and must punish me. What do you do?”

Traumatic.

My cousin lived the Netherlands when she was 19 years old. It was cool for you to have an aol screen name so you could communicate with your friends. My cousin’s last name was Kiem. So just to start out, she made her screename “Kiem meisje” In the Netherlands, this meant “Kiem girl”. She ended up keeping this screename until she moved to the United States in her late thirties. I was helping her situate in her new apartment with the little bit of furniture that she had shipped to the States. Once we unpacked her laptop, she was in a hurry to log on to her aol account so she could let her friends back in the Netherlands know that she had made it safely to her new apartment. I watched her log on when I noticed her screen name “Kiem meisje”. “What in the world?” I asked. She explained to me that it stood for “Kiem girl” as I would say. For the heck of it, we went on to a free online translator to figure out what it would stand for and it turned out to be “germ girl”. We laughed for days!

Everyday I see new inventions flying out into stores! I can’t believe how people just keep thinking of new ways to make our lives so much easier! I haven’t taken too much advantage towards any of these new gadgets. I think that a new laptop would be an incredible addition into my hectic life! With my job as a graphic designer, the only place I have a chance at the computer is my work. Even then there is no time to spare for me to have any alone time on the computer. I could barely squeeze in these 10 minutes or so to right these comments! At home, our computer is completely loaded with my daughter’s music, my other daughter’s photos, and my husband’s links and pictures to motorcycle parts that the whole system takes about 20 minutes for a website to load. Being blessed with this laptop would make things run so much more smoothly in my busy day to day life that is piled with running errands and my daughter’s to their friends’ houses and and school activities.
With this laptop, I could organize my online shopping for this Christmas and the upcoming relative birthdays that just happen to pile up in the December and January months. Being able to have my own time on the laptop would also allow me to work on any unfinished work so I could limit the extra ours that I put into my job and spend ore time with my family. Thank for your time and consideration.

My first screen name was HeavAngel…

And I kept that for YEARS…until I graduated from high school.

Yeah, I’d probably name my laptop Angel…

[...] Last but not least, don’t forget that today is the LAST day you can enter to win the HP Pavilion dm3. [...]

My most embarrassing screen name was “thunderbunny” -because my childhood nickname was bunny and I thought the thunder part sounded cool. I’d had it since ‘92 but then ditched it when I moved to LA in ‘99 because everything here thought it was porn-related.

And I tweeted it! http://twitter.com/losangelista/status/6012707064

My last name used to be “Weier” and my screen name at work was “weierd”, (sounds like “weird”). I used to cringe.

My first screen name was “superflii24″. I came up with it because I liked the name of the old WWF wrestler, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and because my favorite number to wear on sports teams was 24. I made it “superflii” instead of “superfly” because I wanted it to stand out. I was a dork.

My first username was carwine because of my last name. “Auto as in car, vino as in wine, but don’t drink and drive” was my slogan.

I meant to enter this a LONG time ago. Oh well. My first screenname was uhohikie. My nickname in high school was ikie and I used to always say “uh oh.” I’m probably not feeling as embarrassed about it as I should, huh?
