Hello from Texas!
My dad is driving and I thought I’d take some time to share with you a very important lesson I learned recently. If you’re going to move across the country, fly, don’t drive.
But where’s my sense of adventure? I left it at the start of Oklahoma, which I’ve now dubbed Nebraska The Sequel. Texas isn’t any better either – I’m talking to you Amarillo! Yeah, I messed with Texas, what of it?!
When you underestimate travel time and potty breaks and overestimate the capacity of your gas tank, you quickly realize that driving sucks.
And where the hell are the rest stops?! We drove 300 miles without one and my bladder doesn’t take kindly to poor landscaping and geographical planning.
Anyway, in case you’re keeping track I left Chicago around 5 pm Saturday and should be in LA around 6-7 am Monday. We’ll see!
P.S. Don’t start a cross-country trip on Halloween night. I assumed every driver was out to kill me. I stopped for no one.

Don’t let Amarillo ruin Texas for you… Austin is exponentially cooler. I promise!

Yeah, I think Oklahoma is the worst state to drive in, at least in my experience. I’m not a fan of Texas either (I’m allowed, I’m from New Mexico, a rival state), but AshleyD is definitely right about Austion; it’s the coolest city in the whole state. Take pictures of New Mexico for me!

Oh no you didn’t!! Lol! I dunno, I’m born and raised in Texas so I’m all about it… only cuz I don’t know better. But don’t judge Texas based on one city… no way!
Have fun!!!

Are you aware of the super-devil? Because he will get you for messing with Texas. You’ve been warned.

Driving from Chicago to Key West, FL was no picnic either. But we didn’t try it in 1 weekend. We drove from here to Arkansas and stayed with my parents and then drove to Orlando and stayed the night there and then onward to Key West.
Driving Halloween night… you’re are braver than I am. Be happy you didn’t see any white haired children in Nebraska. Or backwards redneck crazies in Oklahoma… Or mass murderers in Texas masquerading as cow butchers…….

Hey! Glad to hear things are going well. I can only imagine how long that trip is and how tired you are of the car but a cross-country road trip, does sound awesome

Haha lesson learnt! It makes me wonder about the details of how this so called “adventure” went for you!

Pretty decent progress, I’d say. And you should be there by now… Let’s hope so anyway.

The middle of Texas is nowhere to be on Halloween night. There are movies about that, you know.

You ever take a lonely back road at night and imagine Jeepers Creepers is out to get you? Creeeeepy feeling!

I randomly found you through….I don’t know where but as a Texan (now living in Illinois) I have to say that the Amarillo area is an unbelievably boring drive. Like others have said…Austin is where it’s at!

I truly wish I could have visited Austin on my drive to LA, but sadly it wasn’t in the cards. I’ll definitely make it a point to visit though. Enjoy Chicago for me!

1. I drove central IL to NYC. My dad went with me…but didn’t drive…at all. Yowza.
2. My sister lives in south Texas. There are no bathrooms south of like…Houston. Anywhere. You better be able to hold it.
Between those two drives I can’t decide if Texas or Pennsylvania is bigger (in terms of personal mental anguish). I mean seriously, PA feels like the longest F-ing state EVER (northern PA that is, not the fun part with Philly). On my last trip I couldn’t find food. A Dairy Queen was literally the only thing I could find and even that was a mile or two from the interstate.
