Does that make me a thief?

by freeandflawed on October 28, 2009

Do you ever recall a memory that makes you wonder if it really happened or if you dreamt it? That happens to me more and more lately. I also sometimes find myself thinking about something, only to ask who ever I’m around if I said it out loud or if it remained in my head. Is this a sign of what’s to come in the future? Who knows.

The reason I ask this is because I had a memory yesterday and I can’t remember if I did it or made it up. I was driving past some hills and noticing the yellow, red and orange leaves cluttering the grass. I thought to myself that it would be so much fun to drag my feet through them and throw them up in the air. This sparked a memory: Driving to the forest preserves with my mom, grandpa and cousins to not only play in the leaves, but to rake them up, put them in garbage bags and bring them home with us. I can only assume we did this because at the time, the tree that now stands in my grandparents’ yard wasn’t there.

Then I thought to myself how weird it must have seemed to anyone else in the area around us. How would I feel if I saw some people bringing home bags of leaves? What would I think?

Then I remembered that my cousins and I would create large circles with the leaves and call them hamster cages.

So I ask you, dear blog, if this really happened or if I made this up. More importantly, am I a nature thief?

I’m still trying to figure out how that is a Hamster Cage.

it might. I have this distant memory that I love to play kites on the roof of my house. Like, how weird is that?

YES. At least once a year I ask my mom if we actually went to the circus and sat in the front row or if I dreamt it. I’ve asked so many times that I’m pretty sure at this point that we actually did it, but I’m still not certain.

Seems like a kid would remember the circus!

I’m pretty sure all of my memories are made up. I even make memories up for other people… i SWEAR my coworker told me that a monkey saved her life when she was little, but she says I am a liar.

Who knows. it does sound pretty insane.

I think I’m guilty of making up memories too. But none are as elaborate as stealing bags of leaves with my family and pretending to be hamseters :)

I’m going to seek counseling if this turns out to be true.

i dunno. it seems like a strange thing for a family to do, but it’s totally believable as a memory… lol i dont think taking leaves is theft. just think of it as recycling. you’re found a new use for the leaves as lawn decoration at your grandparents’ house :)

I like the idea of recycling rather than stealing leaves.

Funny you bring this up; about two weeks ago I was talking with my parents and mentioned something I would have sworn happened. They say it didn’t happen. But I have a memory of it, so was it a dream? I don’t know.

Kind of frustrating and confusing though.

If you would like some leaves, feel free to come to StL. All the rain has pounded them to the ground and I’ll be raking up a ton of leaves this weekend! =)

I do that occasionally… can’t remember if I dreamt something or really did it. I can’t remember the last time I had that happen, but I sympathize with how annoying it is!

That happens to me quite frequently. I remember a while ago I asked the Hubs if we ever went somewhere that there was a barn with a toilet in the middle of it because I could have sworn that was real. It was a dream but it seemed so real. They could be past life memories?

My brother and I both have the same “memory” that we both swear is entirely real – we saw Santa Claus in the living room. My mom is convinced one of us had a dream, told the other, and it became a reality for both of us ever since we were young.
