Without fail my father will call me the minute the game starts to see if I have it on. Even though we spoke earlier that day and agreed that I would be watching it.
On Sunday I was on my way back from my mom’s house, which is about a 5-7 minute drive, when he called at exactly 7 p.m. to ask if I was watching. I said no, I would be home in a few minutes. He was frustrated because it was exactly 7 p.m. and NBC had nothing about football on. I told him to relax because maybe NBC’s clock said 6:59. Soon the game came on and he hung up, not before telling me to call him after I got home and put the game on.
So I put the game on, call him and he proceeds to tell me exactly what I am seeing as if I am not watching the game.
“Man they are really boo’ing Cutter huh?”
“Dad, for the last time it’s CutLER, not CutTER.”
“Man they’re boo’ing him.”
“Yes dad, I know. I’m watching the game.”
“Okay, call me during half time.”
- Half time -
“Man are you watching this game?”
“Yes maaaan, I am.”
“Did you see that 98-yard play? They went all the way down the field!”
“I’m Henry the eighth I am.”
“Yeah Orton is out. Cut his finger. Cutter is out too, looks like they’re bringing Hanie in.”
“Monkey.”
“Cool well I’ll call you when the game starts again.”
- Third Quarter -
“Did you see that Orton cut his finger? On some guy’s glove or something. He was bleeding.”
“This is Jenn’s voicemail. Beep.”
“Yeah, Hanie is in now.”
“…”
“K, call when the game is over.”
- End -
“Did you see Orton’s finger?! Yeah they were really boo’ing Cutter out there.”
“LER! It’s CutLER!” ::slams head on table::
“I gotta find my Cutter jersey for the next game.”
We might not have the best relationship. At times I might call him names or wish he wasn’t related to me, but every Sunday night I look forward to his ridiculous Bears’ game recaps and phone calls. If only for blog fodder…

Hahaha! I've had conversations like that. The most frustrating of conversations, in fact. Both of us are watching the same thing while on the phone, and neither of us are paying attention to the person on the other line. I love how you can say pretty much anything in those situations and get away with it! Craziness!
“Monkey.” Ha!

My dad and I do the same thing during Laker games. It's annoying, though, because he has better cable than I do and I think there's a 20 second delay between what he sees and what I'm watching. Sometimes this ruins the element of surprise at crucial moments.

It's funny; based on twitter activity I had a friend (@nedbraden24) comment on your Bears intensity. He's just as intense, btw.

Is it too much? Do I need to tone it down? He's lucky he's not in the same room with me. I throw things.

Patience is a virtue and you seem to have it in spades. Glad you still have things you can enjoy about your Dad.

That’s cool you at least talk with him about football. I’d watch out for week 2, though. You guys have to play the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers!
