This week I’ve discovered that you love dating bloggers, shared my 80’s crush and learned how many Mikes, Matts and Joes you’ve dated. I’m wrapping up this unintentional relationship week with first dates.
Would you believe that I hadn’t been on a real first date til last summer? Believe it! I’ve gone out with guys before that, but none of them were really dates. I’d say we “hung out.” So anyway, it was my very first date and it was with a semi-retired Chicago blogger. He humored my love for eating outdoors and I was able to enjoy an amazing Italian dinner with some people watching.
After the meal we walked to the beach (the Chicago version) and spent a couple hours talking and burying our feet in the sand. It was a very sweet night that ended with a surprise kiss while walking through the park.
Now it’s your turn. Many of my readers are dating or married. Tell me about your first date. If you’re single, share your best or ideal first date.
How many times have I said “first date” in here?
P.S. A lot of new readers have been popping up this week and I just wanted to say thank you! I know I haven’t replied to all of your comments, but I do appreciate them

My first date with Dave was literally about 15 minutes long! We met on MySpace (HAH) so we had a short date at a coffee shop called “Joe and the Art of Coffee” in the village of NYC. We had a great time in that short span, and then our second date was a Santa Pub Crawl with my friends! That was our first kiss.
Then it kind of snowballed from there!!!

My first date…
Do middle school dances count? I don’t think so.
My first real date was the typical lets-go-to-the-movies first date, so we didn’t have to spend too much time making awkard conversation. You know. It was cute, I got flustered when he decided to hold my hand, and we went out to eat afterwards.
Nothing too embarassing happened

With my now-husband. It was a stormy summer night in Chicago. The power was down all over the city. We had drinks at a cozy candle-lit Argentinean restaurant, actually a test kitchen for an upscale downtown place. Went back to his place for candle lit make outs while the wind blew giant trees down in the street. I had to laugh when I received a text in the middle. It was from a big name in the indie/electronic music scene. He was in town from LA and wanted to hang out. It was like the ultimate test and there was no way I was going to go meet up with the musician. We kissed all night in the dark until we passed out in each other’s arms.

Josh and I had our first date in Chicago. I flew in from Denver for a job interview the next day. We mat outside the Jamba Juice on Clark and spent the next 7 or so hours sipping wine, eating waffles and walking all around Lincoln Park. We grabbed a beer at The Lucky Horseshoe( a gay strip club in boy’s town- his bro is the manager). I slept over (no funny business and quite a waste of a hotel room) and after the interview we met for lunch and ended up making out to NPR in his teeny tiny studio apartment.
It was a long first date.

My first date involved me running late, one hand painted nails, the other without. But then it calmed down, we baked my favorite cupcakes-FUNFETTI!- and watched The Devil Wears Prada, followed by some kisses and cuddling on the couch. It was a good one.

The newf and I went for dinner for our first date and he ate so fast that he was done by the time I had eaten three tortellini. But I stopped because I didn’t just want him to stare at me while I ate so I said I was full and then got a burger after he dropped me off.
Romance.

Steve and I went to Chili’s and Borders. We got to Chili’s and I got so nervous that it took me a full half hour to order. After eating we went to Borders and walked past our favorite shelves, talking about anything and everything. I think I laughed more that night then the whole previous year collectively.

Ok… My first date was the most PG of occassions and occurred the summer before 9th grade with a soon-to-be sophomore who, wait for it, played on the football team. SWOON, right?
Justin and I rode the bus together for a year (middle schoolers and high schoolers on the same bus = recipe for trouble, but I digress.) and he asked me out to go see Pocahontas. Yes. My first-ever date was to go see a Disney movie. (It’s that reason and so many more that I will be in therapy one day.)
Anyhoodles, his parents picked us up and after a horribly awkward pre-date phone call at my mother’s insistance to establish who was paying, we went to the movies. I spent the whole time with my right hand on my leg, palm-side-up so he could have easy access when he wanted to hold hands.
Um, yeah.
Sixty minutes in my wrist started cramping. And still, no hand holding.
Afterward, we went to get ice cream and he tried to hold the door open for me, but I was so damn befuddled I charged right through and almost knocked him in the face with the door.
Sigh. Fourteen years later I’m only marginally less awkward.
In case you’re curious, there was no second date. There was lots of angsty telephoning over the summer and letter writing from our respective camps (him: football; me: sailing) and he sent me a small stuffed teddy bear with a sailboat on it.
Then school started. He wound up being assigned my mom as his 10th grade geometry teacher. And despite my patient instance that he was SO SURELY going to ask me to homecoming, never spoke to me again.
Surely more detail than you wanted to know. Happy Friday!

Ooh i love first dates. Romantic fun dinners, casual drinks. The talks that never stop, especially with a gorgeous guy that has killer eyes that just look at you like they’re trying to melt you down.

My first date with my boyfriend of 6 months, Dodd, was to see the movie Twilight. We went to the old crummy theater in my hometown that I grew up going to, so it was lame but sort of nostalgic. I met him in my hometown of Daytona Beach while their for Thanksgiving, so we’re doing the long distance thing.
It seems that movie dates are often first dates…

my first date with my ex was dessert and a movie, then we talked on the dock until 3am. however, that relationship turned out to be nothing like it should have, so whatever.
my first date with my bf of 1 1/2 years was either dinner with the sort-of surprise (i knew about it a few hours before) his brother & sister-in-law or it was dinner at Applebee’s, and he felt sick, i paid, and we had to leave early. i don’t even remember which “date” came first. haha, but this relationship is awesome, so maybe for me a “good first date” doesn’t mean the relationship will be good!!

My first date was last September. The guy picked me up and we went to sushi. It was a really good dinner, with great conversation. Afterward, we didn’t want the date to end, so we went to a bar and played a couple games of pool. Even though it was about 10:00 after that, we STILL didn’t want the date to end, so we went to the parking lot and he taught me how to drive his car, a stick shift. It was probably the funnest, most spontaneous date ever. A winner.

I’ve been one ONE first date. We went to see a play. It was alright, nothing too memorable. The guy ended up..er..liking guys so, really, it didn’t go anywhere. I guess the theatre date should have hinted at it.
All of my relationships have stemmed from friendships, so even when we decided to date, we didn’t really have a first date because there were so many meals, movies and more shared previously. Which, I guess, is better in a way. No cold feet!

I think my first “date” with my BF now was to see that Denzel Washington drug movie at a theater in Seattle where you can drink while you watch the movie. The whole thing was three hours long, and then we went to a bar afterward where you could play ski ball, and my BF was DRUNK. He was so annoying that I barely went out with him again…
And I say I THINK that was our first date cause there was about two months where I refused to date him and told him I’d just be “his friend.” He finally suckered me into a relationship. lol.

I can’t remember my first date, since I would be “dating” someone but we’d never really go anywhere.
I do, however, remember my first kiss haha and that is the story I’ll share it quickly with you!
I was 16 (I had a sweet 16) and he was 19.
We went to see a scary movie in theaters.
He was sitting facing forward, I was freaked out of my mind, so I was sitting sideways with my legs stretched out, my back on his lap, my face turned into his body, practically crying.
He said something, I asked “what?” and looked up.
Right then, the sneaky bastard, he bounced his knees, so I did a mini body roll from the waist up, and he planted his mouth on mine.
I was so surprised and angry!

My first date with my husband was great!
We met up at Powell’s, a local HUGE bookstore because he didn’t want me walking alone to our lunch place (aww). He then took me to an all vegetarian chinese food place, which was really interesting. We then wandered to a local old-school arcade (which now serves beer and has bands!) and played a bunch of really fun 80’s video games. Then we walked to a local cupcake place. It was such a great, long first date. He was going to re-create it for the proposal, but we weren’t living in the same town at the time.

Would you believe I haven’t been on many real first dates? It seems like most of the guys I’ve ended up dating, I’ve been friends with first. Which sucks because when it ends, it means I lose the friendship.
The only real first date I’ve ever been on (seriously, only one) was awkward. We met at a restaurant (cuz I didn’t know him well enough to let him come pick me up, much to his dismay), I was too busy people watching to pay much attention to him, and he walked me out and I was like, see ya!
I think I like your story better!

I still have yet to have a REAL first date. I’ve been on dates before, even a surprise blind date…not a good surprise either.
My ideal first date would consist of me and The Guy doing something like bowling or an amusement park. As childish as that may sound, lol, I love being places where laughter is shared, but where you can also hold a conversation. Dinner and a walk would be fun, too. I wouldn’t complain, but it would be way easier to completely let loose if a rollercoaster was just around the corner!

My boyfriend and I met at the very end of the spring semester last year, and only knew each other through a mutual friend. Since we didn’t really know each other too well, we started out “hanging out” as well – we called it “pre-dating.” Our first pre-date was just hanging out and talking in my dorm room, then heading to the dining hall for dinner.
Our first official date, I guess, would be after we were out of school for the summer. He came over my house and we went to a nearby park. We played frisbee, walked around, then settled down at a picnic table and chatted for hours. Then we had dinner and went to see Iron Man. No kiss, but a fun night all around. That was when I finally decided I really liked him.

i’ll tell you about my 1st date with my fiance…
we met online via a game we use to play 24/7 if we could… he was a player that left and came back and i was just starting again as well after getting over my divorce and moving to chicago-area from arkansas.
i get a private message: “your in illinois?” and i respond back “yea, what’s it to ya?” lol love me, right? such a wanna be bitch…
fast forward 3 months and we’re talking nonstop on the phone and emailing and texting… i tell him i’m going to my sisters’ wedding (june 2007) and he says “your coming right past me!!” (he lived a few hours sw from me) and so the deal was for me to leave early from work and miss traffic to spend a few leisure hours with him before i go and possibly for him to tag along with me!! how awesome, right?
i made a HUGE FAIL… there was mass construction and mass traffic, I missed my exit and before I realized it I was too far gone
we were both totally disapointed and he was all packed and ready to go to arkansas with me…
a week later on my way back to chicago-land we had set up another meet-up. thankfully no construction on the other side of the highway. and i made it!! we spent a blissfull couple of hours resting at starbucks. i smelled like cat, stinky with my a/c going bad on the way down to arkansas and no way to fix it and i was a mess. but he still hugged me, kissed me and said i was beautiful and worth the wait and missed connection.
a month later he started looking for apartments in my area and ended up moving in with me and my then roomate in our extra room. within another month we were solid and steady. couldn’t stand to be apart. 5 months later we moved into our own condo and here we are now!

That sounds like an absolutely lovely first date.
It’s been a while since I went on one, but my boy’s and my first date was to a tiny Italian restaurant. I think we finished the evening off with a movie at home and a good snuggle.

My first date with my now husband was supposed to be to a nice place on my birthday. However, the klutz that I am, I locked myself out of my dorm room, and couldn’t get back in for 3 days (it was Thanksgiving break), so my first date was at Burger King. mmm double cheeseburger and fries for two, please.

My best date was with a wine distributor. He was so down to earth and genuine. He took me to a jazz bar/italian bistro which is now one of my favorite restaurants (I still remember which table we sat at and refuse to sit at that table ever again because the memories are so powerful) He bought me a rose. He taught me a little about wine in a very kind “hey did you know this?” kind of way (I wasn’t even 21 at the time!). We shared a beautiful bottle of wine and wonderful dinner. The conversation flowed easily. We went for a short walk afterward then he took me home, gave me a butterfly-light kiss on the cheek and thanked me for a wonderful time. I will never forget any of it and still occasionally kick myself for not letting it develop into more or just see how it would have played out. Somehow I see myself married with a nice house in TX but that means I would have never moved to Austin, Lake Tahoe, Seattle or NYC. I’m just not sure I’d ever want to trade those life experiences for what could have been.
