My choice: Two months ago I was sucked into the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie Plum is a laid-off lingerie buyer who finds herself in a bind; she needs cash. Having sold much of her furniture, she goes to work for her cousin Vinnie, who is a bondsman. She convinces him to give her a trial run as a ______ agent aka a bounty hunter.

Imagine Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality. She’s clumsy, quick-witted and talks to her pet hamster. The book really pulls you in when these “easy” cases turn into life or death situations. Plus, the sexual tension between her and another character is palpable. It’s a quick read that will leave you LOLing. I’m already on the third book!
Recommended: A co-worker was telling me about a The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I mentioned that I enjoyed disturbing books and was quickly given a copy. It’s a post-apocalyptic tale about a father and son. I’ve been told it has some very disturbing, even nightmare-causing moments, but still offers hope. From what I’ve read, it seems like it’d be very easy to get attached to these characters.

The book is written differently than most others. There are no chapters, which makes it difficult to find a good stopping point. There are also no quotes, so sometimes it’s difficult to notice when they’re talking versus the narrator. I haven’t hit the scary parts yet; it’s taken me a while to really get into this book. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Upcoming: Teasing Secrets From The Dead by Emily Craig

I love that my mom doesn’t think I’m weird for enjoying books about dead people. I also love that she thinks of me while reading them. Thanks mom! I’m really looking forward to reading this book about famous crime scene investigations. She’s already told me a bit about it and I think anything with cadaver labs is right up my alley!
What are you reading right now?

I love the Stephanie Plum series. I think I’m on number 13 or 14. I’ve only been reading them for less than a year.

I heard that the Plum series is great – it was a HUGE seller when it came out. Might have to try that next! As for “The Road,” I heard it was a bit too disturbing for my taste. Alas. The movies is coming out soon, though, if interested!
I’ve read a bunch of books with no quotation marks. It’s irritating, but gets so natural that you don’t realize they’re not there.

The Road was one of the saddest, creepiest books I’ve ever read. I loved it. Right now I am reading The Red Tent for my book club, a book about the paranormal, and I just finished Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

…this made me realize I haven’t had time to read any books as of late because of work! But at least now I can start a “to-read” list thanks to this post.

Janet Evanovich is one of my new favorite authors (along with Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult…and, of course, Stephenie Meyer
) and I absolutely LOVE the Stephanie Plum series, though I need to start from the beginning.
I picked up Eleven on Top from school and laughed hysterically all the way through. I’m so rooting for Morelli – he sounds yuh-mie!

I’m reading “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Steig Larsson. It took 170 pages and two months to get into it, but now I’ve finally reached the I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN stage.
I’ve read The Road. I thought it was dark, dismal, fascinating, a little creepy. But I wouldn’t put it on my list of favorites.

I love the Stephanie Plum series and am awaiting her newest one, which I think is 15? They’re always good fun.
The Road is brilliant. Honestly, one of the best books I have ever read. I found it hard to get into at first, because, as you say, it’s not written in a conventional style, but it soon sucked me in. I couldn’t believe how attached I was to those people, and scared for them. After finishing I went back and read the beginning again.

Oooo, Cormac McCarthy grew up in Knoxville! I’m more of a fan of Suttree, but that may be because it’s set in Knoxville.
I just finished Flannery O’Conner’s ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find,’ a collection of short stories. I would definitely recommend it. Now I’m reading Such a Pretty Fat (I know, I know, I’m a little behind)
