Annoyance, not curiosity, killed the cat

by freeandflawed on December 3, 2008

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Don’t let their cuteness fool you. These cats are the devil in disguise.

How could such adorable creatures be the devil? Simple. I’m convinced it’s their goal in life to make sure I don’t get a peaceful night of sleep. These cats sleep all day preparing for their nightly mission of keeping me awake.

Voodoo decides that once 1 a.m. rolls around that it’s appropriate to paw at the blinds, causing them to swing and hit each other. This is louder than it seems – especially in a quiet apartment. Yelling doesn’t stop him. Water doesn’t stop him. He continues. So in order to let my roommate get some sleep, I will lock the two of them in my room. Voodoo continues to bat at the blinds. I sleep with the water bottle so I can spray him, but it’s a game to him.

Because the door is closed, he’ll scratch at that once growing tired of the blinds. It’s ridiculous. Last night I was minutes away from finding a cage and throwing him in it. I don’t think he realizes how important it is that I get a good night of sleep. Waking up every 20 minutes isn’t good. I’m completely frustrated with my lack of rest and I’m mad at him for keeping me up.

Seven isn’t innocent either. When she decides that she wants to be cuddled, watch out. It’s important to her that she make me uncomfortable by sticking her paws in my face, sneezing on me or kneading the back of my head.

Why won’t my cats let me sleep?

This made me snigger so much. Mainly because my cat is just as bad. Although his new trick is to sleep in the bed, stretched out alongside me so my boy cant get anywhere near! Try feeding them as late as possible, i find my cat always wants a sleep after dinner…

This made me chuckle because my cats do the same thing. My boy cat loves to beat on the blinds at 5 in the morning or he climbs all over me to snuggle, then gets up and starts all over again. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

My kitteh isn’t allowed upstairs because she will wake me at 0400 by biting my head. i’ve just trained her into wanting to go out at night and stay in sleeping during the day. i do love her mostest though

I feel your pain, sister…

No…wait. That’s the pain of contorting my spine around two wiener dogs on a nightly basis.

I hear ya, got a snoring husband on one side and my cat on the other, usually taking 2/3 of the pillow. She believes 4 a.m. is treat-time and I have to bribe her not to talk (so that my husband doesn’t wake up!) by giving in. I was on vacation last week and left her a nice cat sitter, but I have not stopped “hearing” about it since my return, 3 days later and my cat is still complaining and stuck to my side like glue! She can’t glean any closer to my body and the last 2 nights every 30 minutes or so she has to wake me to make sure I know how unhappy she is that we left her! One more night and I will be looking for that cage too!

This is what cats do! They sleep and laze around all day and then go crazy at night! Any time I have stayed at a friends house who has cats, I never get a good night of sleep! Cats are so crazy and nocturnal, there is no hope.

All I can say is wellllll I think you won’t like my answer but you may have to get rid of them. :( If that isn’t an option maybe you can find something cats HATE and attached to the front of you door so they won’t scratch it.

I feel so lucky that my cats don’t pull that crap with me at night, but your post did make me think back to see if there was anything I *did* to make them behave… and all I can come up with is that each night I used to play with Miss Kitty, but I had a rule. Once she got hyper and ran OUT of the room, the game was over. She picked up on it real quick, and we’d play for maybe 10 or 15 minutes each night. She’d run out, I’d put the toy down and turn off the light. When she came back in, she got a few cat treats and had to go to bed too. Maybe you can try a similar routine?! Good luck! *HUG*

I feel you! My cat likes to play with the blinds only between the hours of 11pm-2am. And wakes me up by jumping on my head. What do they have against us sleeping!

My dog is like this. He doesn’t seem to understand that just because he gets to sleep all day, that does not mean that we both should be awake all night.

Here are my tips;

put some tape (sticky side up) on where he stands to bat the blinds. You can also use foil, or those plastic carpet protectors with the teeth side up.

put some coins in a can and either shake them at him or attach them to the blinds.

Try scenting the blinds with citrus or white vinegar, some cats don’t like the smell.

Let me know if they work!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever commented on your blog (I think I have) but I’ve been reading it for awhile. I wanted to tell you that my cat does all of the things you just mentioned! I was beyond frustrated. I would throw fits in the middle of the night simply because I was so exhausted and he would not let up. The water didn’t work, nothing worked. My solution: kitty got shipped off to my mom’s! He’ll get a lot more attention there. I also wanted to tell you that my boss found some things to keep her cat out of the bedroom and complacent. Apparently it’s like a kitty pheremone releaser that you plug into the wall. you can get them at petsmart. If you put a bed there, the cats will stay in that area and probably sleep because they feel comfortable there.

I feel your pain and I hope you find a good solution soon!

Oh, mine did the same things, plus this annoying habit he has of licking all the wood furniture–which at 3am is the loudest sound on the planet.
The solution that finally worked for us? About an hour before bedtime, we would play with the kitty, hardcore, for at least 30-45 minutes–mostly letting him stalk and chase things. At the end, we would give him one little food treat as his “kill”. Since we started that, no more waking up in the middle of the night. Dunno why (I think I read the technique in a book somewhere), but oh god am I glad to have it.

Ugh – kitties are the worst at night! Mine have figured out that they can dive under the covers at the foot of the bed and come after your feet – little kitty claws tearing at your toes? Not peaceful!

That’s why I keep my dog in a crate. If he wasn’t, no doubt I’d wake up to him chewing on my foot.

Just like my cats. I’m on a cycle now where I go 5 days with sleep that’s so bad, I can sleep through their nastiness on the 6th day.

I found that not responding to them in any way until my alarm goes off has helped slightly, but it’s not perfect.

You are so not alone. I would like to know if cats have some innate sense of what will annoy the humans the most. I mean, the freakin blinds are there all day, but the only time my cat ef’s with them is at night. She also bats the lamp cords, scratches the walls and sends anything I have loose on the dresser flying across the room. And if I lock her in the other bedroom, she paws at the door all night and MMMEEOOWWSSS!!!

Husband and I are adopting our first cat on Monday. Now I’m scared! Although with many foster cats we’ve never had a problem. They sleep with us until they are insane, then we close the door and they play in the living room.

Reminds me of my old kitty… he was so hungry all the time. I used to feed him when he woke me up, then go back to sleep, but it kept getting earlier, and earlier, until he would be scratching and meowing at 3am. So I began spraying him with water. So, then, at 3 am, he would wake me up and run and hide when I woke up. I eventually had to lock him in the bathroom with the fan on until a more reasonable time because I couldn’t reinforce him for his awful behaviour by feeding him…

I’d say this is why I have a dog and not a cat, but the dog tries to make sure I don’t get a good night’s sleep either by wedging all 55 pounds of her muscle right up against me so I can’t turn over. Sigh. Pets.

This makes me happy because Lucy does the same thing for me. One of her favorite things is to run around the room as fast as she can, jumping on the bed and landing on top of me.

It sucks, huh? Here’s to hoping the cats let you sleep a little more in the future.

When I used to live with my best friend, her cat would wake me up EVERY morning at 7am sharp. She’d sit there and meow this horrible meow that sounded more like someone squeezing an ostridge, and then when that wouldn’t work she’d start pawing her claw-free paws at the door and SLAMMING HER HEAD on the door, which really just sounded sad. So I’d finally let her in. Annnd that’s why this happened every morning. Freakin’ cats!
