Black Friday is not for the weak

by freeandflawed on November 28, 2008

I am not built for Black Friday shopping.

I accidentally woke up around 5 a.m. Well, at least I think it was an accident. My cat Voodoo may believe otherwise. He’s such an ass face. I was trying to go back to sleep, but I could hear cars zipping around outside and I realized that the stores were probably packed already. Should I get up and go? Did I really need anything? I didn’t even know what people wanted for Christmas!

My curiosity got the best of me. By 5:40 I was out the door and on my way down the street to Target. I drove by Best Buy, Target and Kohls. The parking lots were packed. I told myself if I couldn’t find a spot to park, I’d go home. Sure enough there was a spot in the front row waiting for me. Then I saw IT. There was a two person deep line wrapped around Target. Holy shiz. I decided to go into Kohls since it was already open. Target had another 10 minutes.

I am not a shopper. I like stuff. I like buying stuff. More importantly, I like playing with the new stuff. I think I’ll stick to online shopping from now on. I bought a few sweaters for work and a gift for someone. Due to my good line karma, I let someone go ahead of me, the line ended up moving rather quickly. I ventured over to Target, which was a HUGE mistake. I should have gone directly to electronics because I told my cousin if I found a Wii, I’d get it for her. I stopped by the DVDs first and grabbed a few. Then again, I saw IT. The Wii. It was there. If I didn’t have to climb over people and their shopping carts I would have had it. I should have thrown punches. I called my cousin to let her know I had failed.

I did manage to score a pretty nifty iPod dock. I’m happy. I got some GREAT deals on DVDs though. I got a couple new releases for ONLY $5.98. Color me happy. I was even happier when I got out of there. It only took me a little over an hour to shop. I’m home and don’t plan on going back out all day. Those people are crazy. I don’t understand why people complain about it though. If you’re one of the yahoos who go to the store at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, why complain? You should know better. If you don’t like the crowd, don’t go. Don’t make my shopping experience even more miserable because you can’t keep your mouth shut.

On that note, I think I need more sleep. I’m off to work for a bit and then lounging on the couch with some new DVDs :)

Happy Black Friday folks!

Enjoy your relaxing Black Friday.

I was supposed to work today (at one of the stores you mentioned) but traded hours with a co-worker and couldn’t be happier about it.

I’ve worked Black Friday for the past four years, and seriously, those shoppers? The craziest of them all.

WOW you are BRAVE! Funny I woke up about 5:15 this morning and thought about everyone probably going out shopping, then I rolled over and went back to sleep.

I’ve done it once or twice, and I hate it. Too many people. Too much chaos. My favorite Christmas shopping experience was the year that I bought everything online.

WH is working a 13 hour day today, though, so shop on. I love me some overtime! ;-)

It sounds like you got some amazing deals today. I happily stayed in bed cuddling up next to boyfriend. Once we did venture outside I was so happy not to have gone because of the look of the parking lots.

Dan does the Black Friday thing since he is such an early riser anyways. I say a silent prayer each year that he doesn’t get killed by a crazy housewife.

I’m not a big shopper either and prefer playing with the stuff afterwards too to the actual act of shopping!

My mom wanted to go see Twilight and they were having a 9:45am viewing. We went to a few places before hand around 8. I got some great DVDs on the same deal as you did! AND my mom and I were the only ones in the theater, it was like our own little private viewing. LOL. I wasnt too traumatized by Black Friday shopping either. Which movies did you get?

I have yet to do the whole Black Friday craziness, and part of it intrigues me. The problem is that I rarely want any of the “doorbusters” at stores other than smaller stores like the ones in the mall.

Here’s a tip, though – if you’re not looking for anything on the list of doorbusters, there are still a TON of amazing deals that go all day. My mom and I always swing by Target around 1pm and have a 95% success rate in finding all the cheap DVDs on our list.

I was back home in Indiana and hit Kohl’s at 4:30. The line was already formed at Target next door… which didn’t open until 6:00. Crazy shit.

I just read the news about the poor employee from Walmart(?) who got trampled by shoppers. It’s nuts! We think it’s pretty special when the stores over here in Australia open early at 8:00am…

I went out and about today but only to be out and about. Bought a few things, but didn’t rush the sales. I lasted a whopping nine minutes in Best Buy before I rushed to make my purchase (the new Killers CD!) and get the heck out. The madness is definitely not my cup of tea.

I went shopping today, but left the house at 10am. Also, someone DIED at a Walmart by me from a Black Friday tidal wave of people. Awful, right?

You are brave. I have never done the black Friday thing. I think because I always feel like I have to prepare- check out the coupons the night before and decide what I will go after. It’s like a race, getting up that early in the morning makes it feel that way, and because I never prepare, I never go through with it. Because it is just so hectic,I feel like I will fail so I avoid it. I am crazy sometimes.

Wow you are brave to go out to Target that early. I would not go near there. The mall near us wasn’t bad at all in the morning so I will take it. Can’t wait to see what you got!

I am a shopping enthusiast and won’t touch Black Friday with a 10-foot pole! I got my Christmas shopping done last Tuesday- there were still sales going on but no crowds to be seen.
