iLASIK: Steps to Better Vision

My eyes are exhausted. In the last week I’ve read more than 700 pages and I’m excited about adding on another 1300. I’m so happy these bifocals of mine are updated or my eyes would be very upset with me. I went through far too much to get these glasses, I’d hate to have them suddenly crap out on me.

This got me thinking about what it would be like if I didn’t have glasses. Of course I wouldn’t want to have issues seeing. My mom, stepdad and aunt have all gotten Lasik surgery to correct their vision. All three of them see really happy with their decision.

I’m occasionally asked by family and friends if I’d consider getting the procedure. Honestly, right now, I don’t think I would. My glasses give me character. My I feel naked without them! Sometimes I forget that they’re on, and I try to poke my eyes just to make sure they’re still there. Yeah…because there isn’t an easier and safer way to do that…

So just in case I decide to ever go ahead with the procedure…you know, after I’ve grown tired of cleaning these things…I did a bit of research. I found this video that really sums up the before, during and after of iLASIK. More information can be found at iLASIK. My eyes seem to be getting worse every year. Ahh the joys of aging! But I’m not sure if I’m quite ready to part with my specs. It’s definitely something I’ll keep on the back burner, but for right now, I think I’ll stick with my glasses.

I’m curious – have any of you had the procedure done? If you have, are you happy with your results? Would you recommend it to a friend? If you haven’t, are you curious about it? Why or why not?

I had Lasik done last year – and I was really happy about it. I was scheduled to teach that night, and the place where I had it done told me that some of their clients are Broadway performers who can go onstage the same day. I had the procedure done in the morning, went home and slept for 6 hours, and was able to teach that night. I have been very happy with the results.

I personally have not, but my mother had cataract surgery with the replacement lenses being corrective, and she can basically see without glasses for the first time ever.

My best friend has had it done. And she definitely recommends it. I have considered it but my ophthalmologist is wary of performing the procedure because he follows the rule that your eyesight must have stayed the same for at least two years before doing it. Otherwise, he can’t guarantee its success.

For now, I’m happy with my lenses and wearing my glasses when I want to have asyousay, a little character. :)

I’d love to have it done– I’ve talked to my eye doctor and he says I’m a perfect candidate, but I’ve just never gotten around to making it a priority.

I wore contacts for five years before switching back to glasses. I like my glasses, but my eyesight diminishes each year I wear glasses but stays stable with contacts. I’m starting to get a little fed up with glasses again and am considering switching back to contacts. If I could afford it, would I get Lasik surgery? Maybe. I have to qualms about poking my fingers in my eye twice a day with contacts, but something about peeling the skin of my eye back and having a laser beam shot into my retinas gives me the heebie-jeebies. I think that in order for me to get my eyes done, I’d have to be severely intoxicated to get it done.

I think about it all the time, but I haven’t done anything about it yet. I would love to not have to bother with specs or contacts, to be able to wake up in the morning and see without groping for my glasses and sending them flying. I might one day, but I do worry I’ll be that one person that everything goes wrong for and end up blind. But my eyes are so bad I probably ought to just bite the bullet, at least have a consultation.

One of my best friends from college had the procedure and has been amazed with her “magic eyes” ever since. She has better than perfect vision now, if that’s even possible.

I haven’t ever considered it. But … I’m one of those shitheads who doesn’t wear glasses. I think should I ever get to a point where I’m wearing glasses, I would definitely think about it … because the alternative of wearing contacts and poking my eyes everyday is repulsive!

Dave had it done this summer and LOVES it. Will rave about it to anyone that will listen. I however am chicken shit and am terrified to get it. Plus my vision is HORRIBLE, so I’m afraid I’ll be one of those people where it doesnt correct to 100%, and I’ll still have to wear contacts.

I have friends who have done this and really loved it – but they all said you can smell the laser burning your eyes!

So there’s that to consider…

I love my glasses though, I wouldn’t exchange them.

My mom had Lasik and she knows a few others who have too. There seem to be mixed experiences, depending on your eye sight and the types of problems you have.

I helped her through the “surgery” though, and took her to a hotel to spend the night afterwards (which I guess is part of the procedure). She was high from valium or something and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. ;)

I have thought about Lasik before as well. I where contacts and sometimes I think it would be nice not to have to worry about getting up and putting in my contacts.

I have also thought of things like what if you get stuck on a deserted island and you don’t have contacts with you or your glasses break, what are you going to do??

But in the long run I don’t think I would have Lasik, what if something gets screwed up. I have heard good and bad stories about Lasik. I think I would rather just stay away from deserted islands, then go through Lasik.

I hoping to have it done in the future. The only time I think about it is when I go to the eye doctor and he tells me I’m a perfect candidate. Oh the joys of not having to find my glasses in the morning.

I absolutely love my glasses. I wear contacts on occasion, like if it’s super sunny and I’ll be pissed without sunglasses, or if I have to get all dressed up and meet people. (Unless it’s work stuff, then I keep glasses on because I feel like it makes me look smarter.) I could never ever get LASIK. I get queasy even thinking about someone doing anything to my eyes! So I’ll stick with my fancy glasses and occasional contacts and I’m perfectly happy.

I love my glasses too. They’re part of my character, and I’m always getting compliments on them. Whenever I wear contacts (which is very rare) I always feel like my face is naked.

i don’t even remember what its like to wake up and be able to SEE. well.. except for those times where i forget to take my contacts out before bed, but considering the burning and itching that comes along with that, i don’t think it really counts.
though it won’t be anytime soon, i could definitely go for some laser vision correction. and just wear glasses for fun.

I hate my contacts, so I’ve always been intrigued at the idea. Right now, it’s the money and the fact that I would have to smell my eyeballs burning that’s keeping me from taking the plunge. That and I just know I’d be the one in a million person who went blind.

I’d love to suit glasses but I just don’t. I’ve worn contacts for fifteen years now cos I’m really short-sighted and probably if I was told I had to quit wearing them, I’d be first in line for laser eye surgery. It definitely seems a lot safer than it used to be and I do know quite a few people who have had it. So it’s definitely a possibility at some point . . .

My mom (who was legally blind without glasses or contacts) got it done about 10 years ago, just after the improvements to the technique were approved or something. She said it was the best decision she’s ever made, and seeing for the first time afterward was the second-best feeling she’s ever had (giving birth to her kids being number one!). I’d say to do it if you get the chance!

I’m like you – i’m rather partial to my glasses. They’re who I am! Plus, even though it’s safe, I really don’t want lasers by my eyes. Maybe that’s just me. I know people who have had it done and they’re loving life minus glasses. So maybe one day, but for now, I’m a glasses gal.

I wanted Lasik and it was promised to me as a birthday present by the (former) SO last year. He later reneged saying he needed the money for something else. I still want it, but after having the same glasses for almost 5 years now, I’d be happy with just a new pair!

I have the Lasik procedure done about 5 years ago and it was the single best thing I could have ever done. I’d worn my glasses since 3rd grade, my eyesight got progressively worse and by they time I was 21 I was very close to being legally blind. I literally couldn’t see 8 inches in front of my face without corrective lenses of some sort. The surgery was a lifesaver for me. I love just being able to open my eyes and see, something that I wasnt able to do for a long time. I cried when I sat up from surgery and could read the clock on the wall. Its been over 5 years and my vision is considered 20/20+. I say if you can have the surgery, do it. If you are really attached to wearing glasses, you can always get non-prescription ones. Feel free to email me if you want to talk more about it.

I love my glasses way too much to get it done… I can’t even stand to touch my eyes to put in contacts. Don’t let your love of glasses hold you back though. If you do decide to do it, you can always buy glasses with non-prescription lenses just for the look (I read that’s what Drew Carey did).

I love your glasses! I too, wear glasses (well, most of the time I wear contacts!) Without them I’m more than 50% legally blind! Scary…I might eventually go for Lasik but my doctor suggested sticking with contacts as long as my eyes will tolerate!

I’ve had glasses since I was 5-ish. I’m basically blind without them, so sometimes I think I’d love to have Lasik so I could see when I go swimming or hey, take a shower, but then I remember that I don’t like the way I look without them. So they stay.

However, the bf had lasik a few years ago, before I met him. He is quite pleased with it.

I’ve had PRK which is also a vision corretive surgery. My recovery time SUCKED, but now I no longer need glasses or have to cart around contact solution or worry about getting into the ocean or a pool and fear losing my contact lenses. B/C I couldn’t see without them – at all. One of the BEST things I could’ve done for myself. Totally 100% worth it.

I’m 30, and I had LASIK 10 years ago. I wasn’t allowed to drive w/o glasses, and my frames were bottle-cap thick, so I wore contacts, which were a giant pain. I still see great! It really changed my life from the moment I realized I could see while walking to the lobby after my procedure. Do it!
