Don’t call it Frisco!

by freeandflawed on July 16, 2008

What to expect while I’m gone:
\

\
At least one drunk post.
\
Tweets from two very excited travelers.
\
Three live blogs from BlogHer sessions.
\
Guest blogs from four amazingly awesome bloggers.
\
No less than five “super fuck yeahs” from yours truly.
\

\
By this time tomorrow I will be sitting next to Jamie on a plane on our way to San Francisco for BlogHer ’08. I’m really excited to see our hotel because J surprised me and had our room upgraded for my birthday. Hot damn! Throw some free wine into the mix and you’ll find two VERY happy travelers wandering around SF.
\

\
Since I am live blogging you might see two or three posts pop up on Friday or Saturday. I am linking from my blog and not directly from BlogHer’s so read, ignore, do what you will with them! Be sure to watch out for the guest blogs though. Those you surely don’t want to miss.
\

\
What I’m live blogging:
\
- What We Do: DIY Content Syndication and Promotion
\
- Who We Are: “Coming Out” via Blog (revealing personal issues to your blog community)
\
- Closing Keynote: Living the Truman Show with Heather Armstrong & Stephanie Klein
\

\
What I’m looking forward to:
\
- 20SB meet-up
\
- Chicago bloggers meet-up
\
- What We Do: Writing Workshop
\
- How We Communicate: Building Traffic via Content and Community
\
- Who We Are: Can You Take Back Naked Blogging?
\
- What We Do: Blog to Book Redux
\

\
Sunday will be our free day as we didn’t sign up for that day of the “un-conference.” I’d love to see Alcatraz, but I read that it’s a 2.5 hour-ish tour. Totally worth it, yes, but feasible? Eh. We’ll see.
\

\
If you had a few hours to kill in San Francisco, what would you do?

I visited SF/Napa for the 1st time in May. Go to the Golden Gate bridge, the Northwest side has the best view – near the Marin Headlands. We went at least 4 times, as the weather changed each day.
\

\
Chowder at Boudin’s at the Wharf is so yummy. Deem Sum at Yank Sing is the best (only open for lunch I think).

Have fun!

i second the city lights bookstore recommendation. also, their modern art museum is pretty cool. ghiradelli square is a hot spot. and make sure to get some clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. yum. yum. yum.

If I had free time in SF, I don’t know what I would do. There is so much I want to see there. I’d probably walk around and take a lot of pictures honestly, maybe write a little. Have fun, sounds like it’s going to be an awesome trip.

I’m so jealous of all you BlogHer bound bloggers. I’ll just look forward to your live blogging, and maybe if you guys have enough fun, I’ll be convinced to shell out $100 for the Boston leg of the BlogHer tour in October.

Time off in San Fran? I’d find the cute, quaint neighborhoods and have me a goooooood ole time. Oh, and food. I’d need to find a local place to eat as well.

Oh yay! You’re going to have such fun. And I’m going to have to catch up on your blog after I get back from vacation. But, drink lots, make lots of great connections and be sure to share a little of what you’ve learned with those of us less fortunate souls who cannot go!

Alcatraz is mobbed with tourists (especially in the summer). I’d go take a long walk in the Mission (try Valencia and 16th) or upper Haight.

I wouldn’t do Alcatraz. At least not the tour. It’s audio-guided, and if you get lost inside (meaning turning right instead of left, or whatever) (which has happened to me every time I’ve taken the audio tour), you won’t be able to find out where you are in the audio tour. So while you may be in the cafeteria of the prison, you could be listening about all the escape attempts. Sure, Alcatraz is cool, but not THAT cool. Take a look around on your own, just not the tour. That’s my advice.
\

\
And there’s TONS of shopping downtown! Also, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can take BART to Berkeley and go see all the hippies there. It’s pretty fun and there are always a TON of cool shops!
\

\
Either way, definitely email me while you’re here! I might be going to the beach on Sunday with some friends, but those plans aren’t solid yet! Maybe we could get drinks one of the other nights, after all the conference stuff is over?

OH! I just realized what you should do. The Haunted San Francisco walking tour! SF Ghost Hunt.
\

\
SO. WORTH. IT.
\

\
OMG, amazing. $20/person, and it’s absolutely FANTASTIC.

I love SF! (Was born there and lived there till I was 7!) Anyway if you wanna shop you should walk around Union Square and Market Street, definitely eat some sourdough (like the clam chowder bread bowl) at Boudin’s, or walk around Golden Gate Park, or pick up some food and head to the Marina for an incredible view of the Golden Gate Bridge and a picnic. Take lots of pictures!! Have a great time!!

I actually would advocate for the Alcatraz tour. I would also highly advocate for visiting the Ghirardelli ice cream shoppe. And, I would somewhat advocate for walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was on that day that I realized I’m deathly afraid of bridges…but it is a very cool experience.

Bundle up at night…that place gets cold compared to our lovely midwestern nights!
