I was completely surprised when the evening news covered this story. Really? REALLY? This story deserves 15 minutes of airtime and a videochat with some kind of “celebrity expert”? I think this entry neatly sums up how I feel about it, as well, down to how the media is blowing it out of proportion to the perplexing way the Cyruses are handling it. Gah. What a world we live in.

I don’t see anything wrong with it, only that the picture itself doesn’t look very attractive. Is it me or does it look like she was punched in the mouth? Yeah this is getting way too much attention. Seriously.

Honestly, I don’t care too much about what she’s wearing. But they couldn’t have chosen a more flattering picture? She looks like a vampire in that shot. It’s just unattractive.

I was thinking the same thing - what is the big deal? She is covered in a frickn’ sheet! All you can see is her back! I’d be more worried about these pictures.

Interview with the Vampire. Photo isn’t that great at all considering the photographer is “so amazing”.

I don’t know, I think it kind of bugs me. I’m totally not prudish about these things, but it’s creepy. Although, the one where she’s lying in her dad’s lap is even more icky to me.

I don’t think it’s flattering either though.

It’s not like 15 year olds everywhere don’t pose half-nekkid for their boyfriends anyway.

But I do think her face looks weird in the pic. And I’m with Allie — the one of her posing in Billy Ray’s lap is icky weird.

i think the picture sucks and it isn’t attractive. plus i think it is wrong. i mean she is FIFTEEN! she should not be posing like that. especially with her parents approval and that’s what makes it worse. the vanessa hudgens pictures weren’t supposed to be public originally. these were. ugh. jenn, can you tell i’m fired up about this?!? ha

i don’t really see the big deal about it either. i think she got scared by the idea of it possibly becoming a “scandal,” and that’s why she’s claiming she’s now embarrassed about it. i feel like if she hadn’t said anything, it would NOT have been that big of a deal.

I hate to admit it- but I can kinda see why it’s causing some issues. Maybe it shouldn’t to the extent that it is- but she’s fifteen! It isn’t so much the VF picture that gets me (although I totally see the vampire thing! creepy..), it’s all the pictures that are being released on the internet. The flashing and all of that. I’m no prude.. but I don’t want to see a fifteen year old girl half naked and thinking this is the way to get publicity. I don’t like what it’s coming to- Miley doing it, that chick from the Hills releasing her own topless photos- I don’t knowm, just feels cheap to me.

It’s kind of gross that kids are being glamourified like that but even more gross that they somehow took Miley (who’s inappropriately beautiful for her age and yes I’m just jealous) and made her look like see just tore off someone’s jugular with her teeth.

I think the whole thing about it (not that I know who this girl is, it was covered on the UK news this morning) is that she’s 15. Young girls like that should not be objectifying themselves and having photos of them which look like they’ve just woken up from a night with 3 gigolos and a donkey (or something!)

I would imagine that middle-America is pissed off because she’s supposed to a role model, not someone reminding them that yes, their daughter will eventually have sex.

I couldn’t agree more with you. I don’t think there is anything particularly offensive about the photo. Its just a bad photo.

a) she kinda creeps me out in that picture. I think it’s the pale, pale skin with the red, red lips
\

\
b) people need to get their panties out of a knot. there are MUCH more important things to worry about than this crap.

Do you think maybe all of this was Annie L’s point? I mean what’s disturbing about the pic is possibly the exact statement she’s making about what Hollywood is doing to these kids.

OMG I was watching the Today show this morning while getting ready for work and they were talking about what you should say to your kids if they ask about. How about asking your kids why they were reading Vanity Fair? It is a photo shoot for an adult magazine, kids shouldn’t be exposed to it, and therefore they shouldn’t know anything about it. I hate when shit like this gets on the news. Dude, I paid $53 to fill up my gas tank, lets talk about something real on the news!

So, I’ve only seen the cover shot, not the others. And while I’m a little appalled it’s receiving as much press as it has, I think there’s a point to it. Kids these days? Aren’t kids for very long. They are trying and experimenting and crossing lines younger and younger.
\

\
And a lot of it does have to do with the things they pay attention to … music, movies, TV, sports. Everyone in those industries serves as role models. Kids are going to want to do what their famous counterparts are doing. And I’m sorry, but if I saw an adult taking pictures of a 13-year old only draped by a sheet? I’d think that’s kind of perverted. Even if it is *tastefully* done.
\

\
Sure, you can argue good parenting will keep most kids from crossing those lines. But, who’s to say if the good kids are hanging out with the line-crossing kids, the good ones won’t experiment, too? Shit happens and I think the celebrities should serve as role models for what’s truly age appropriate.

My very loud two cents.

It has to do with the hypersexualization and fetishism of young girls. It’s disgusting that girls are subjected to the ideal of “looking sexy” at such a young age. Personally, I don’t think this is “nothing,” I think it’s getting the WRONG kind of media attention — “look at the little prostitot!” rather than opening a thoughtful forum on the upsetting reality young women are subjected to day in and day out.

Accidentally Me said in April 29th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I actually do have a problem with it…actually a couple of them (and, I should preface this by pointing out that my 13 year old sister lives with me and is just growing into herself and all of that good stuff).
\

\
First, 15 year old girls shouldn’t be sex symbols. And these pictures are not “artsy” or “message-filled” or any of that. They are meant to be provocative and to show her as a desirable sexual object.
\

\
Second, she and her handlers should be cognisant of her fan base. I don’t want to sound like a total prude, but a lot of the $1 million a week that she makes is based on being a totally acceptable and harmless entertainer that millions of parents feel comfortable letting their little girls enjoy. Along with that fame and money should come a responsibility to live up to that reputaion.
\

\
Third, what does it teach little girls? When are we going to stop telling little girls that they are only valued so much as they can be physically desirable? We should celebrate her for being smart and talented and generous and all sorts of other qualities…not because she can get a rise out of people by looking older than her age.
\

OK, now I feel like an old fart…
