Reasons to smile

by freeandflawed on April 7, 2008

All smiles today folks! Mini financial crisis averted. Today I walked into the financial aid office and said “Hey! I’m not paying your stinkin’ tuition! I’m coming here for free and you’re gonna let me, or else!” Obviously my intimidation tactics* worked because they agreed. I will be attending school with a big fat smile on my face knowing ZERO amount of dollars came out of my pocket.

Later I went to get fingerprinted for my massage therapy license. It was fast and easy. More importantly, it was ink-free. God bless technology. I filled out the paper work, wrote a check and mailed my application today. I expect to be licensed in a matter of weeks. Give me your money and I will rub** your back!

My grandma was ever so kind to offer to pick me up from the train. I called as I was getting on to let her know I’d be at my stop in 15 minutes. No answer. I assumed she was outside. I called when I got to my stop. No answer. Eh, I decided to give her a bit more time. Called again. No answer. I called my aunt to get my grandma’s cell phone number. Called. Not even on.*** So I called another aunt to see if she’s heard from the folks. She tried calling nearly an hour ago and there was no answer. So it’s safe to say we were a bit worried. They didn’t say they were going anywhere and usually my grandma doesn’t take my grandpa when she goes out.
\

\
So needless to say I was concerned that maybe somebody broke in and murdered them. Then I started thinking about what my cats would do in a situation like that.**** Would they stay inside and lick the dead bodies? Would they turn into ninja cats and kill the attacker? Would they run outside if the door was left open? Aunt #2 picked me up and just as I got into the car guess who calls? My grandma! It’s been an hour! She went to the bank and forgot to turn on her phone. Bad grandma, bad! But hey, at least they’re alive!
\

\
* Intimidation tactics, eh not so much. Turns out my estimate of $27,000 was a little fudged and really my tuition is only $13k. I ended up getting 15k in federal aid. No loans for me suckas! But still, if anyone asks, it was the intimidation tactics. I stood on a chair and everything (you know, so I’d be taller.)
\
** By rub I mean get a minion to smack you around a bit.
\
*** Rule #1 of having a cell phone: turn it on.
\
**** Notice how my concern for the grandfolks quickly turned into worries about my cats. Yeah, my priorities are in the right place.

Sign me up for a massage. I’m a crazed bride. All the advice books tell me to pamper myself from time to time!

When my mom first got a cell phone, she always had it off or left it at home. What’s the point of having a cell phone then?

Oh, and I’m officially jealous of your loan free life as I prepare to take out loans for the next year and contemplate grad school. Fun financial times ahead.

My dog would totally stick around and eat the body, she will hang out if there is blood around. Sorry, I know that sounds really gross. But she loves to lick blood. Ok, I’m going to stop talking now, there is no way to make that not sound terrible.

I just want to tell everyone who already loves Jenn that she donated money to me for a bike ride I am doing in June (for MS research). on her student’s salary and administrative assistant salary, she took the time to give a little and I am SO SO IMPRESSED!
\

\
Thank you Jenn. :)
\

\
And ps. how did you get grants versus loans? right now, my school is only offering me loans and I WANT FREE! Should I try your intimidation tactics? Hm…
