Public Art

Cloud Gate, or as it’s better known, “The Bean,” will have a new friend come February.

Millennium Park, home to Cloud Gate and Crown Fountain, will soon welcome the addition of “Paintings Below Zero.” The new installation will be a 95-foot long multicolored wall of ice with abstract patterns and shards of ice “jutting out.”

Canadian artist Gordon Halloran will unveil plans for the installation today. Creation will take place in mid-December and he will begin setting it up in mid-January.

Millennium Park is one of my favorite parts of Chicago. The Bean, which usually attracts hundreds of people per day, is a piece of art I’ve grown to really enjoy. The reflection of the Chicago skyline looks amazing. The distorted self-portraits taken in its side or under it’s belly are fantastic as well.

It will be really awesome to see some new art added to the park. Sadly it will all melt away come spring time.
