Moon Cakes

by freeandflawed on September 26, 2007

RF now has its factories in China (who doesn’t?) and many of my co-workers go to China for meetings and holidays. Recently J went to Hong Kong and brought us all back some moon cakes.

Moon cakes, as I’ve learned, are used during the Chinese Moon Festival which takes place on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. It’s also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival. The cakes are a kind of cookie with fillings of sugar, fat, sesame, walnut, lotus seeds, the yoke of preserved eggs, ham, dried flower petals or other material. The surface of the food is patterned with clouds, the moon, the rabbit.

Many people in the office didn’t like it which makes me skeptical about trying it. I also think it’s really pretty and don’t want to ruin it. Oddly it smells a lot like peanut butter so I should be tempted to eat it.

Here’s a much better picture of a moon cake:
