Bad Week: Macy’s

Macy’s just can’t catch a break. Most Chicagoans know that Macy’s bought out the beloved downtown Chicago landmark Marshall Field’s a couple years ago. Since then, Macy’s sales have been down (mostly from angered consumers staging a boycott), their food court was shutdown this past Monday after a case of drosophia melanogaster broke out and now this.

Last night around 8 p.m., after the store closed, an unidentified non-employee of Macy’s, plunged over the balcony near the atrium on the 8th floor. He was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Police are treating it as a suicide, but so far it is unclear if he jumped or just fell.

I believe many Chicagoans will chalk this up to Macy’s bad luck. Perhaps he was a Field’s fan and this was his plan to stop sales at Macy’s. It sucks for Macy’s and it sucks for the man who fell/jumped.

An autopsy will be done today to make a final ruling on the cause of death.

As far as I know, Macy’s on the corner of State and Washington, is still open for business today. Their food court has reopened as well.
