In my quest to find the perfect hot dog, I have been introduced to Spike’s Junkyard Dogs during my visit to Boston this past weekend.
I knew that I had seen this particular place on Hot Dogs in the City before ever stepping foot in the place. I was informed that the review that was submitted is rather short and lacks a picture of the food being raved about. So I’ve taken it upon myself and my extensive knowledge [a.k.a. love] of hot dogs to write another review in hopes that Hot Dogs in the City will post mine!

If you’re hungry, you’re in luck. Spike’s may have relatively low prices on their menu but they are certainly not cheap with the beef. The hot dogs are definitely meatier than most hot dogs. Picture those plump Ballpark Franks…now imagine a hot dog even better than one of those. Yep…that would be a junkyard dog. The bun isn’t a typical hot dog bun either. I felt like I should have been eating a roast beef sandwich instead of a hot dog. The buns are freshly baked at Spike’s and you can definitely taste the difference.
My quest-for-the-best-hot-dog-co-captain enjoyed a Junkyard Dog, which has tomato (though he asked for it without), a pickle, scallions, pepperoncini, and Spike’s mustard. I, being a simple gal, tried the Mutt. Now sure you get a plain hot dog, but you are able to put your own toppings on. Being from Chicago, I am a HUGE fan of the Chicago dog
So I didn’t venture out too far away from my comfort zone, but I wasn’t disappointed. If I were to stray away from my Chicago roots, I would have definitely gone for the Pizza Dog (pizza sauce, mozzarella & Italian spices). For a complete list of the options available at Spike’s, click here .
Spike’s not only offers ridiculously good hot dogs, there’s a great selection of chicken sandwiches, wraps, subs, pizza and “spare parts” (fries, salads, etc.) They also have a veggie dog for our non-meat lover friends.

So if you ever find yourself in the Boston area, wander over to 1076 Boylston Street (on the corner of Mass. Ave) and get yourself a junkyard dog. You won’t be disappointed. If you are, I will pay for your hot dog. Another cool thing about this place is their hot dog wall of fame (I know it’s not really called that, but I wasn’t able to catch the correct name). People who eat at least six of Spike’s ginormous dogs get their picture put up on the wall and a T-Shirt. The current champion has downed 14 hot dogs…and it’s a woman! Go her! I plan to get my picture on that wall some day.
