Captain’s Log: NY Trip

by freeandflawed on April 6, 2007

March 29: I left for NY (on time!) Thursday morning. The airport was packed with spring breakers…probably all going to some super warm destination.

The flight was flippin sweet. I flew JetBlue, a first for me, and I really was not disappointed. Each passenger had their own TV on the back of the seat in front of them with around 30 channels, including USA, Discovery, History Channel, etc. I watched “Never Been Kissed” and some “Dharma & Greg” episodes. We were also offered cookies, chips, nuts, and a few other things. I liked the options. Oh, and the leg room! Not that I have long legs that would require the extra room, but I still like having breathing space between myself and the seat in front of me. The cramped look isn’t a flattering one.

I landed at JFK and let me tell you, I’ve never been more confused at an airport before. It seemed so all over the place. But they were doing some construction it seems, so I won’t hold it against them.

Dan picked me up and he gave me a little tour around his home town, Levittown in Long Island. After the tour we grabbed some necessities (cereal and bananas hehe) and went to visit his friend, well I supposed he’s our friend Jon. I spoke to Jon for a few years online after I first met Dan. (They’re good friends) He was surprised to see me. Dan didn’t tell him we were dropping by or even that I was in NY. Best reaction ever. After watching some Guitar Hero we headed back to his uncle’s house so I could shower. Later that night we went to see “300.” Yes, I have seen that movie 3 times now. I think I’m good haha!

Dan’s uncle has a very large German shepherd named Hans.

He’s the sweetest dog in the world though. His uncle said I could take him home. I don’t know where I’d put him!

March 30: Today we hopped on the train to Penn Station and began our NY adventure. I was super excited. Penn is insane. SO many people. We immediately set out for the Empire State Building.

We found it, but there was a 90 minute wait to go up. I passed. It would have been nice to see the view, but I didn’t want to wait in a line for 90 minutes. I picked up a couple gifts and another map when we came across The Museum of Sex. Totally interested we made a Bee-line toward it. After calling to find out the price of admission, we decided to pass. The Museum of Modern Art was having a Target Free Night from 4-8 that day, so we opted for that instead. So we continued walking from Penn up toward Times Square, which I some how walked through with NO idea. I saw Radio City Music Hall, CBS Studios and NBC Studios. We stopped off at Jamba Juice…oh how exciting! I haven’t had anything from there in a very long time! We finally made it to Central Park and met up with an lj friend of mine. We walked through about half of Central Park, watched some ice skaters, saw a ballerina mime. Check out her Myspace page.

Then we headed over to MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). The line looked like something you’d see at Six Flags. I guess we weren’t the only ones to know about this free night. The line went fast though. There were some pretty cool exhibits though. I took some pics, which I’ll include in a bunch at the end of this post. There were six floors of art and I think we covered three of them. Dan’s feet were hurting him and he was limpy mclimpington. We decided to leave and grab a bite to eat. My LJ friend led us to one of his favorite organic cafés. The food was pretty good. I had nachos! Afterward, we hopped on the subway (which has bigger cars than the CTA but smells worse) and parted ways. Dan an I headed back to his uncle’s house where I soon fell asleep after getting home.

March 31: Today we did some driving around Long Island. We went to Amityville where I finally saw the Amityville Horror house! The people who live there now changed the paint and windows (understandably) but since I knew what I was looking for I could still recognize the house.

[Amityville house]

I am curious as to why people are living there though. The murders would have been enough for me to pass…but after the book and two movies…(well four if you count the horrible sequels)…no thanks. I wonder how much they paid for the place.

Then we went to the All American Burger for lunch. It was a pretty busy place. I had a hot dog which in no way was comparable to a Chicago dog. It was good none the less. We headed over to Jones Beach afterwards and did some walking, sea shell throwing and writing in the sand. It was fun but much too cold. Damnit, where’s the warm weather?! We went out for sushi for dinner. It was pretty good, but my stomach was buggin me from all the dairy I’ve had (woo for being lactose intolerant!) We came home and watched “The Benchwarmers” and “Casino Royale.”

April 1: Today we went to see Ground Zero. Click here to see the Ground Zero Cam. I’m not sure what I was expecting..but I didn’t feel like the site was all that moving. If I didn’t know in advance that’s where the WTC buildings stood, I would have just thought there was some construction going on. It’s like there wasn’t even a single sign saying Ground Zero or anything like that. Did I miss it? I mean, it was strange not seeing the buildings there…and since I know what happened it was hard not to feel some sadness, but I just expected a more intense, emotional experience. We headed over to Battery Park to buy our tickets for the ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately they weren’t letting anybody up into the statue for the rest of the day, I think because of the weather. It was really gloomy, cold and rainy. Security to get onto the fairy was like the airport, minus the shoes being taken off. The statue wasn’t as big as I thought it would be, but it was still cool to see none the less. I’m glad I had the chance to visit all of these places.

[Ground Zero. From what I saw on the news the other night, they are still finding remains of people who died there. Two more people were identified...still leaving thousands unnamed.]

I have SO many pictures from this trip. I hosted many of them over at my Flickr account
