PostSecret

I have been a fan of the site PostSecret for a while. I even sent in my own secret, which wasn’t posted.

Every Sunday I check the site and see the updated secrets. People from all over the world send in a secret on a postcard or index card in hopes of the rest of the world seeing it. It’s quite liberating to share a secret with thousands of strangers.

Anyway, on my other blog I usually post my favorites from the new set. So here you go!

A brief history on PostSecret.

News A Day Late v.2

Prince Harry, 22, known more for partying til dawn than waking for battle, will be deployed to Iraq. His regiment is expected to set out in May or June for a six-month tour. “He has been trained to lead a team of 12 men in four armored reconnaissance vehicles and could become the first British royal to see combat since his uncle, Prince Andrew.” (Associated Press)

While I commend a son of royalty actually fighting in a war…I’m not all that proud (mostly because I have no major opinions of him or his family).

It’s this next piece that bothers me a bit:
Britain’s Ministry of Defense has previously said harry could be kept out of situations where his presence could jeopardize his comrades. Col. Bob Stewart, a former British commander, said he was certain Harry would be safe. ‘The Blues and Royals will take great pride in making sure no one gets near him,’ he said. ‘I can’t think of better security than having a regiment of British soldiers around you.’”

Maybe I’m confused and not understanding correctly…but why does he get such special treatment because he is the son of Princess Diana? None of our soldiers are guaranteed safety when they report to Iraq. Doesn’t seem very fair to me.

Anna Nicole Smith. Why is she so newsworthy? Death is a tragic thing, especially when its somebody who was so young…but what did she do that effected society so greatly? I’m sorry, but shakin’ your boobs, marrying a rich guy, getting your own TV show to prove how dumb you are and then selling your soul to Trimspa doesn’t seem like an awesome achievement worth so much media coverage. So she was a star in the celebrity gossip world…so what? I’m sorry if I seem insensitive, but I don’t see why every newspaper needs to be following this.

According to The Red Eye a state report says the mass-transit system in Chicago needs a major overhaul.

I think I speak for all of the commuters in Chicago when I say: Duh?! No wonder the CTA sucks ass. It’s taken them this long to figure out there are problems. This worries me.

State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) introduced a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois this past Thursday.

“Illinois is a heartland state but has always been a leader in civil rights and social justice issues,” said Harris.

This proposal would eliminate wording in state law that marriage is between “a man and a woman” and substitute the phrase “two persons.

I say: It’s about damn time! It’s time for all those close-minded people to wake up. You’re not going to catch the gay gene from two people getting married who happen to be of the same sex. Most of you who are against it are homo-phobes and don’t even care about the Bible argument. It’s not hurting you, so shut your trap and mind your own business.

The Number 23 was released this past Friday. I had the pleasure of seeing it today. Going into it I had very high hopes for this movie. I like seeing Jim Carrey outside of his quirky, funny-man roles. The first thirty minutes were pretty slow. Honestly, I didn’t really get sucked in until we started nearing the end and I began getting confused. I think that’s what pulled me in so I could figure out wtf just happened.

I would recommend this movie only because I believe the ending was a pretty good one. And I must admit, I did come home and try many names and birthdays to see if they equaled 23. I did find that Sept. 11 equaled 23 (09/11/2001: 9 + 11 + 2 + 1) I’m disappointed to find that there’s a lack of 23 in my life.

Mr. Cranky doesn’t seem to think too fondly of this movie. He gave it a three out of a possible four on the “Painfully Awful” scale. He does provide us with this fun fact though: It was better than “Fun with Dick and Jane” but worse than “The Truman Show.”

So, if you’re into numerology or paranoia…definitely go see this movie. If you’re into actors stepping outside of their comfort zone, walk, don’t run to see this movie. If you’re just a very critical person and don’t like many mainstream movies, well…I’ve got nothin’.

And as a final tid bit of hub bub (LOVE that word) enough with the Britney Spears crap okay? I’ve seen enough.

They said what?!

Anyone who reads my other blog probably already knows about this site, but some of you may not as I’ve acquired some new readers over the weekend.

Overheard In Chicago is a blog created by Ziggy in Morton Grove, a suburb of Chicago. Readers submit tid bits of conversations heard while commuting, in the office, school, etc.

I find almost all of the posts very entertaining. It’s always fun catching people’s conversations at the wrong moment. And you’d be pretty surprised what people will say when they think nobody is listening :D
Enjoy! Feel free to share your favorites.

To Vista, Or Not to Vista

I recently acquired a new laptop that runs Windows new OS: Vista

I knew very little about Vista before getting the computer. I’m more of an impulse person rather than a shop-around and learn-as-much-as-you-can-about-a-product person. I agreed to take the computer regardless of its operating system. Then the dreaded words came out of the salesperson’s mouth: not compatible. Every other word in that sentence seemed to disappear and I focused on the not and the compatible. I soon learned that since Vista is so new, not many programs are compatible with it just yet. I soon began focusing on it’s security features

But what do I know? I took the laptop home with me anyway. After turning it on, I became overwhelmed for whatever reason by the differences I noticed from XP. Some people will argue that there aren’t many differences….I on the other hand am used to running one version of Windows and rarely step outside of that safety zone…so anything other than XP is brand spankin new to me.

I found a few blogs this morning in which people share their opinion on Vista:

To Vista

Not to Vista

I’ve only been using it for about a day, so I can’t form an opinion on it just yet. I am concerned about the lack of compatible programs and the annoyance of the “cancel vs. allow” messages that pop up (they’re almost worse than popups!) But I’m a simple gal and enjoy the sheer fact that I can have a magic 8 ball gadget on my desktop. So for now….I’m content.

A tid bit of information about Vista

The only opinion I can offer on the matter at this point in time is that I believe the word “Vista” should be a verb or adjective:

“You’re looking very vista today!”

“What’s up? Oh nothing, I just vista’ed.”

Edit: More and more people dislike Vista everyday. Here is a list of 122 reasons why to not upgrade to Vista. I found this over at Blogoblog

JetBlue is sorry

I recently received an email from JetBlue apologizing for their worst operational week ever in the company’s history. Last week JetBlue experienced unacceptable delays, flight cancellations, lost baggage and other major inconveniences due to winter ice storm that swept through the Midwest before attacking the Northeast.

JetBlue flights had delays up until 11 hours with passengers sitting on the runway mere yards from their gate but unable to get off. Others sat in line waiting for clearance to take off in case the weather let up any time soon. The airline wanted their planes ready to go when the weather calmed down.

In the last few days JetBlue has promised to refund flights and offer free flights to those passengers inconvenienced by this storm. The airline has also issued a Customer’s Bill of Rights

This bill includes notifying customers of cancellations or delays and their cause, vouchers for future travels for a canceled flight and money vouchers for delayed flights. The amount of the voucher depends on the length of the delay.

I think JetBlue is doing a great thing by offering this Bill of Rights. Many airlines experience problems with departure times, etc. and getting any sort of refund is almost more trouble than it is worth. I think more airlines should use JetBlue as an example and motivation to better their customer service. The delays that occurred last week don’t make me think twice about my future business with JetBlue. I am flying to NY with them and will continue to use them until I feel that my customer service needs haven’t been met.

JetBlue is an American-low-cost airline in the Queens borough of New York City. It’s home airport is John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. They recently began offering flights out of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. They currently offer flights to and from 56 locations.

Here’s to continued success at O’Hare!

Don’t step on my toad

Snickerdoodles! I just couldn’t stop myself from posting this video It’s too great. Random = Funny.

Sex, Spies and Videotape

Chicago’s Red Eye newspaper (an edition of the Chicago Tribune, believes that you know you’ve made it in Hollywood if you’re cast as a spy.

Ryan Phillippe (Cruel Intentions Flags of Our Fathers) will be staring in Breach which is due out this year. He plays an FBI trainee assigned to snoop on a veteran agent who turns out o be a spy for the Russians.

Red Eye has come up with a name for the elite group of movie spies called “The Suave Six.” Included in the six are Ryan Phillippe in “Breach” (2007), George Clooney in Syriana (2005), Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears (2002), Brad Pitt in Spy Game (2001), Matt Damon in The Good Shepherd (2006) and Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006).

And now, RedEye’s take on “Why They’re Suave”

Phillippe: “Though he has said his divorce from Reese Witherspoon is taking atoll on him, Phillippe is winning critical kudos for his work in ‘Breach.’”

Clooney: “Actually, for his role as CIA operative Bob Barnes, Clooney became decidedly un-suave by gaining weight and growing a beard.”

Affleck: “He’s always had a sense of humor about his film flops and made a dignified comeback in the indie drama ‘Hollywoodland.’”

Pitt: “He rides motorcycles. He’s married to the sexiest woman alive. His hobby is architecture. Shall we go on?”

Damon: “He’s Hollywood’s go-to guy for cop/secret agent roles (see: The Departed The Bourne Identity ‘Syriana’).”

Craig: “Um, did you see the shot of the new James Bond in swim trunks?”

News a day late

Peter Pan Peanut Butter has been recalled for salmonella

Thursday government scientists struggled to pinpoint the source of the first U.S. salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter. Nearly 300 people in 39 states have fallen ill since August. Federal health investigators strongly suspect Peter Pan peanut butter and certain batches of Wal-Mart’s Great Value house brand to be the culprits.

How the dangerous germ got into the peanut butter is a mystery. All I can say is that with the crazy amount of peanut butter I eat, I’m glad I’m not one of those 300 people. Peter Pan…get your shit together yo!

Passengers aboard JetBlue flights will be receiving full refunds and/or free flights due to the obnoxious delays experienced recently.

Passengers were left on planes at a New York airport for as long as 11 hours during an ice and snow storm this past Thursday. The spokesman for JetBlue said they kept he people on the planes due to “congestion, frozen equipment and an effort to keep planes ready to go in case the weather broke.”

More than 250 of JetBlue’s flights were canceled, but “fairly normal” service resumed on Thursday. A passenger landed at JFK around 10 a.m. but they were unable to get off until nearly 7 p.m. Onboard the planes, snack foods were handed out and bathrooms became unpleasant. “They had to open the door every 20 minutes just so we could get air.” And if that wasn’t enough…they were mere feet away from the gate. The plane could have easily opened up their doors and let the passengers walk to the airport.

Luckily JetBlue, a new addition at O’Hare, isn’t experiencing any out-of-the-norm problems. Other than having a flight to NY cost $69 and Boston is $209….but that’s my own personal problem with them :) _________________________

Many schools have been following the lead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other highly competitive schools by posting everything from lectures notes to sample tests, and even making audio and video files of actual lecture publicly available.

In their efforts, they are hoping it leads to “more interest from potential applicants and inspires alumni in far-flung locales to make a donation.”

MIT’s pioneering OpenCourseWare program, which was launched in 2003, posts the syllabus and class notes for more than 1,500 courses online for anyone who wants them. By November, it aims to publish materials from all 1,800 of its courses across all its schools.

As of last fall, the University of Notre Dame began offering eight courses. They plan to increase the number of classes offered online to 30 over the next two years.

Yale University has announced it will produce digital videos of undergraduate lecture classes and make them available free to the public.

Apparently Scottie Pippen is ready to play in the NBA again. Pippen, 41, says he is in better condition and health than at any time in the last five years.

Pippen will give an indication of wher he his physically when he teams with the Bulls’ Ben Gordon and the Chicago Sky’s Candice Dupree in the “Shooting Stars” contest as part of tonight’s All-Star festivities.

Pippen is trying to come back for the playoffs. He last played for the Bulls in the 2003-04 season, when knee problems limited him to 23 games.

We’ll see Pippen…we’ll see.

Chris Cornell is apparently too cool for Audioslave.

Cornell told billboard.com that he has split from the group to pursue solo projects. Cornell has what I think is probably one of the best voices out there. I think he’ll do fine with or without Audioslave.
